What to Do & See ?

What you ‘do and see’ will ultimately depend on what your interests are and how much time you have to travel.

Read extensively through your South America Travel Guide Book. Make a notepad list of places that interest you. Then highlight these places on your South America Map. You will then start forming an idea about your preferred travel plan.

Recently I received an email from a traveller asking me to nominate my personal top 5 ‘must do & see things’ in South America... a tough task because I could easily list my top 30 destinations!

In no particular order here are 5 of my favourite South American tourist attractions:

(Hold your mouse pointer over each picture for individual comments)

Vista Spectacular! Salt Plains, Bolivia. 4 day tour which has endless highlights
  • Salt Plains 4x4 Tour (Bolivia)

Trekking in Peru. Note that the Inca Trail usually closes for month of February each year
  • Machu Picchu & Inca Trail (Peru)

Tour of Iguazú Falls - on my tour group I had the pleasure of meeting these young Americans studying abroad - all fluent in Portuguese!
  • Iguazú Falls (Brazil & Argentina)

Boat visit to Perito Moreno Glacier - Argentina. Beanie and warm clothes required!
  • Perito Moreno Glacier (Argentina)

The Potosi mine tour, Bolivia. I'm on the left holding the lantern.
  • Potosi Mine Tour (Bolivia)

Nicks Travel Notes: "Potosi Mine tour is not recommended to those who are claustrophobic! If you do a tour of the Potosi Mine remember to take a plastic bag to protect your camera from the knee deep mud... a lesson I learned the hard way!"

Here are some other favourites to consider - the list is endless!
  • Galápagos Islands Cruise (Ecuador)
  • Pantanal Tour (Brazil)
  • Easter Island (Chile)
  • Boca Juniors Soccer Game (Argentina)
  • Whale & Penguin Spotting Tour (Argentina)
  • Volcano Snowboarding (Chile)
  • Lake Titicaca Boat Tour & Island Homestay (Peru)
  • Beaches & Surfing (Brasil, Argentina, Chile, Peru)
  • Ferry day trip from Buenos Aires (Argentina) to Colonia (Uruguay)
  • Carnival (Brazil)
  • Itaipu Dam (Brazil & Paraguay)
  • Patagonia Channel & Fjord Cruise (Chile)
