Brazil
Nicks Travel Notes: “Foz do Iguaçu on the Brazil / Argentina border is an amazing destination that should not be missed!”
The spectacular Foz do Iguaçu (The Iguazu Falls)
Highlights
- Florianópolis (best beaches in South America)
- Amazon exploring (take a river cruise)
- Carnival (Rio most popular Carnival)
- Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazu Falls)
- Football game in Rio (see Tour link below)
- Mato Grosso do Sul (access vast areas of Pantanal)
- Porto de Galinhas (Recife) (snorkeling, diving, surfing)
- Fernando de Noronha Island (day hikes, beaches, snorkeling, sailing)
- The Brazilian people!
When to go
- During summer (December to February) expect tourist and beach areas to be crowded with holidaying locals.
- Foz do Iguaçu (Iguazú Falls) can be visited year round. The best times to go are either the Spring or Autumn (Fall). Summer is intensely tropically hot and humid, and in winter the water level is considerably lower.
- Carnival takes place in late February and is celebrated in various towns and cities.
Popular tours in Brazil
Click here to search for Brazil tours. Below are some Brazil tours for those visiting the Rio de Janerio and surrounding region. Please make sure you confirm tour dates availability on the booking link forms (some tours are seasonal).
- Favela Tour in Rio. This tour introduces you to Rocinha, the biggest favela (shanty towns) in Brazil and Vila Canoas next to the rich area of São Conrado. Highly recommended by fellow travellers.
- State Tour. 7 Day tour from Rio de Janerio. Includes Paraty (Parati), Ilha Grande, beach of Lopes Mendes, with optional trekking, canyoning, rappelling, mountain biking, boat trips, snorkeling, and scuba diving.
- Rio Football Match. Watching any football game in South America is an experience. True passion!
- Iguaçu Falls can be visited all year round. Foz do Iguaçu is the nearest city on the Brasil side; Puerto Iguazu is the nearest city on the Argentine side. You'll need 2 days to visit both the Brasil National Park (grand overview of falls) and Argentine National Park (up close to falls). Make sure you visit both sides! I have linked this tour for those travelling from Argentina.

Accommodation Options
Search and compare extensive Brasil accommodation options here. Select 'Brazil' from the country list. Then select the location city or town. Through this search link you should be able to find hostels and hotels starting as cheap as US $7-8 per night.
In Rio de Janerio the Ace Backpackers Youth Hostel is the cheapest option and in a great location.
Many thanks to my friend Sheila for her additional Brazil travel tips!
